SIX STEPS PARENTING PROGRAMME

Now called "Are we there yet?"

This programme emphasises the expertise of the parents and not the professionals, focuses on what parents are already doing successfully to help them resolve their difficulties. It focuses on the strengths, resources and skills parents are showing everyday in parenting their children. The approach allows parents to move away from a problem-saturated story of their parenting, which can often be overwhelming and may disconnect them from their strengths and resources.

The approach is highly practical and does not make distinctions between who would or would not find the approach useful. It is also cost effective and does not require ‘specialist’ training for facilitators. The Programme helps parents move beyond the labels and diagnosis that they and their children are often given, to a position in which parents become empowered to find their own solutions to their difficulties.

Cork YMCA aims to be the lead agent in this programme in the city and will be coordinating the training and support of trainer/ facilitators.

PAKT (Parents and Kids Together)


This programme emphasises the importance of the family and earlier youth work intervention - learning that happens between the ages of 6 & 11 is highly significant in shaping attitudes and behaviour in adolescence-. PAKT is based in a local community and includes parents as active participants both in activities and in the management of the project. It operates within an inclusive Christian ethos: projects are expected to incorporate Christian values of love, friendship and tolerance in the belief that such values benefit and enrich participants and their local community.



There will be two after school learning activities for kids aged 6-10 and a personal development or learning activity for the parents of their choosing. There will also be organised family events from time to time. The pilot initiative will be run in .....
