S.T.E.P. started in 1988 in Cork YMCA. There are two twenty two week programmes each year, usually beginning in January and August.

It’s a great way to make new friends but most of all it’s a chance to STEP into a new future.

The new programme, I.T. STEP includes two days per week I.T. training with ECDL certification, a further two days are spent on
Preparation for the World of Work & Communication Skills ( Fetac Level 1).

Groups vary in size from 6 -10 young people who work together and share their good and bad experiences of unemployment and look at ways to make progress.

 
S.T.E.P. stands for:
Support, Training and Enterprise Programme.

STEP trains in practical areas like computers and health and safety.
It gives experience of the world of work.
It gives practical assistance on how to apply for jobs.
It develops teamwork skills.
It improves communication skills and builds confidence.

Programme Content

 
World of Employment.
Job applications, interview preparation, job growth areas, rights, health and safety and travelling abroad.

Communications.

Project work aimed at improving listening, reading/interpretation, writing and non-verbal communication.

Computers.
Introduction, word-processing, spreadsheets, database and typing.

Personal, Social and Health.

Planning skills, goal setting, relationships, and social issues.



 

Other modules include Citizenship and YShare our World. The latter helps young people to come to terms with the rapidly changing cultural landscape in Ireland of the Celtic Tiger!

Qualifications
You will have an opportunity to get European Computer Driving Licence certification, FETAC level 1 certification in Preparation for the World of Work and Communications.

What it will it cost?
S.T.E.P. won't cost a penny but it does require time and energy to be of any value. Participants receive the equivalent of FAS Training allowances & transport costs are covered.
This YMCA Course is funded by the Early School Leaver's Initiative of the Department of Education.
